In This Corner Next week marks the release of Alien vs. Predator, the latest film that takes elements from two different film franchises that have seen better days and pits them against one another in a single movie outing. Like last year’s Freddy vs. Jason, which was fueled by the final shot in Jason Goes to Hell, this particular match has been in the works for some time, tracing it’s roots back to a quick scene near the climax of the second Predator film. One can only wonder that if successful like the Freddy and Jason movie, will this further entice studio execs to dig up other film relics to mix together in order to spawn further interest, and more importantly, profit? For a while, rumors abounded of a Batman vs. Superman film, which would have breathed new life into two tired series. However, than never came to pass and now each series is trying to revive itself with new entries…though that new Superman film may show up a few years later than next summer’s Batman Begins. With all that in mind, I thought I’d take a look at some match ups and/or crossovers that I personally would like to see (ok, maybe not all of them), despite the slim...er...impossible chances of seeing them come to pass. Daredevil vs. X-Men – Given the fact that 20th Century Fox owns the film rights to both of these, there is a slightly less impossible chance of seeing this one in a few years. Then again, does it sound even slightly interesting in concept? I suppose not. Still, there is a certain fascination at seeing the X gang go “mutant” on Ben Affleck’s ass. Critters vs. Gremlins – The ultimate conflict to determine which species can eat the most. A starship crashes, Critters get loose, Gizmo gets wet, snacks after midnight and before you know it, small furry and scaly things are running amok, each vying for control of the same small town. Wait! That almost sounds like a crime drama. Well, perhaps making this film would be a crime. Doctor Who/Blake’s 7 – Ok, so neither are film franchises, but can I be the only one who ever fancied the thought of the Tardis materializing on the bridge of the Liberator, the Doctor emerging only to be met by Blake, Avon, Vila and the rest pointing weapons at him before he offers them a jelly baby? Then he could help them avert some scheme of Servalan. K-9 and Orac working together! I always thought the Blake’s 7 setting, with it’s oppressive Federation, could easily be squeezed somewhere into the Doctor Who timeline. Gojira vs. GINO – Call this a personal fantasy, where the original, and dare I say kick ass, Japanese Gojira (albeit the modernized take on Big G) takes on and utterly creams that upstart American GINO aka Godzilla In Name Only that Tri-Star put out a few years back. Of course, the movie would be quite short, as the wimpy American lizard wouldn’t survive one blast of Gojira’s atomic breath. Looks like we may just get this match up in the upcoming Godzilla: Final Wars if rumors are true. Godzilla vs. Gamera – The two greatest Japanese Daikaiju go at it! What Kaiju fan hasn't dreamt of this match up, which would pit Toho's Titan against Daei's Dynamo? One thing for sure, no matter who wins, fanboys will moan. Blade vs. Buffy – Vampires are running rampant! The world teeters on the edge of a new dark age. Fighting back the night is the Slayer – she who has defeated scores of suckers. Coming across the Day Walker, she mistakes him for another mutant vamp. The fight is on! The two B’s go at it until they realize that they’re on the same side and team up to rid the earth of those pesky vampires. Oh well, I’m sure whatever the studios do come up with will be a surprise...and quite possibly quite bad. -Shadow
